Joanna Helander, Kobieta. En bok om kvinnor i Polen (1978)

This photographic documentary depicting women’s living and working conditions under social realism was shot mainly in Upper Silesia. The photos, supplemented by conversations with the book’s central characters, create a model example of socially engaged, original reporting published with the distance conferred by emigration. Many of the shots went on to be published and exhibited time and again, becoming icons and establishing Helander as a superb portraitist and documentarian.
