The album contains colour photos of Chartes cathedral which document the details of the building; the view of the nave, sculptures, decorations and details inaccessible to visitors. The cathedral is presented as a total work of art, a gesamtkunstwerk, where the beauty is brought out by the stained glass and the effect of the light at various times of day and night. Kossakowski’s photographs complement the archival material and detailed descriptions of the cathedral in the text by a distinguished expert in mediaeval architecture, Sorbonne professor Ann Prache.
